The inspection division is responsible for ensuring public health, safety, and welfare associated with the design, construction, and utilization of public and private buildings. The Town inspector ensures compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

Building Permits and Inspections/Housing and Business Maintenance Code Violations-Permitting and inspections for all new construction and upgrades to existing structures service is provided by Alleghany County.  Any and all necessary building/renovation permits can be obtained from the building inspector’s office of Alleghany County.

The Town’s Code Enforcement official is responsible for property maintenance and code enforcement of properties in town.  Town employees reinspect the property.  If the violation has not been abated, the Town has the right to and will enforce the code violated either by use of Public Works employees or a private contractor.  Property owners will receive an invoice for the cost of the necessary abatement.  Failure to pay the invoice within 30 days will result in a lien being placed upon the property.  If the property owner fails to abate the cited nuisance and violation, they can be summoned to court.  To report a violation, call the Code Enforcement office at (540) 863-2509.
